Imagine 2020 Summer Labs

The Imagine 2020 network of European arts organisations, of which Artsadmin is a founding member, run a continuing programme of international Summer Labs for artists.

The labs are an opportunity to join other artists, scientists, economists, philosophers, policy makers, NGO representatives from across Europe to learn new approaches to how we can bring together art, activism and science to tackle climate change and engage in a dialogue on global transition.

The current programme of Summer Labs will take place from 2016-2019 in Slovenia, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and the UK.

Imagine 2020 Summer Lab – Art, Ecology and Possible Futures
29-31 August 2016 - Ljubljana Marshes, Slovenia
Deadline for applications: 20 June 2016, 6pm

This is an opportunity for a UK-based artists over 18 working in performance, live art or theatre with an interest in ecology and sustainability. The selected participant will take part in a three-day lab outside in the beautiful, natural environment of Slovenia, interrogating the processes by which pollution is taking effect on the fragile equilibrium of the ecosystem of Ljubljana Marshes, an area worryingly affected by pesticides.

The goal of the lab is to work collaboratively to imagine interventions and solutions to the problem, to engage and give voices (real and imagined) to human and non-human inhabitants, creating dialogues around concepts such as ‘environmental racism’, in collaboration with local health-related organisations and communities. Modelled on, but also critiquing the idea of, a ‘toxic tour’, participants will work with multidisciplinary practitioners in fields of art, biology, ecology, agriculture and faith to guide them through the research process.

Applicants should show evidence of a practice concerned with issues of toxicity (in a broad social, gendered, political sense) and the ‘Anthropocene'; outlining intentions to research human/non-human interactions and co-living; and demonstrating a concern with the legal rights of nature.

Artsadmin will cover travel costs from UK to Ljubljana and provide per diems of £25 a day. The host organisation in Slovenia, Bunker, will provide accommodation and meals. The working language of the lab will be English.

HOW TO APPLY

Please write a proposal of no more than 500 words, explaining how the themes underpinning the lab relate to and would develop your practice, including a brief artist’s statement and examples of your work. Please send your application to sarah@artsadmin.co.uk by 6pm, 20 June 2016

Please note – there is also an opportunity to attend the two-day ‘Ready to Change’ conference on arts and sustainability in Ljubljana on 26-27 August 2016 prior to the Lab, although we will not be able to cover all participant expenses for this period.

Imagine 2020 Summer Lab 2014 – The Camp

In Summer 2014, Artsadmin hosted an Imagine 2020 Summer Lab in the South Downs National Park. The Summer Lab website designed by artist Richard Houguez acts as a document and reflection on what that year's group got up to over five days at the Sustainability Centre, Hampshire.

The activity and learning of every Imagine 2020 Summer Lab is different, shaped by the lead partner organisation, those who attend and the local climate issue(s) they are responding to.
