Malik Nashad Sharpe

Profile

Malik Nashad Sharpe (Marikiscrycrycry) is an award-winning choreographer and movement director known for his provocative and formally engaging performance works that address themes of violence, alienation, horror, melancholia, and the horizon. His work has been commissioned and shown across venues, festivals, and contexts in Europe, U.K., and North America. In 2022, he was named a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree for his contribution to dance in Europe.  He is currently an Associate Artist at The Place and a guest professor in dance and performance at the Stockholm University of Arts.

Bursary plans

Malik was an Artsadmin Bursary artist in 2018. He used his bursary to endow a new choreographic project and way of working called DANCEw/YUNGMARIK!!, which expanded upon the research residue from their solo practice, brought forth and challenged their aesthetic concerns by working consistently with a group of invited performers and dancers.

He was particularly interested in establishing deeper connections between the dances that proliferate throughout the Black public on the Internet, the choreographic ritual, the advent of soundcloud rap and its pertinent political and emotional content, and what dancing proposes and can propose.
