“Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty.”
– Junichiro Tanizaki

“Light is therefore a colour.”
– J.M.W Turner

This season’s Weekender Lab focuses on lighting from different viewpoints with two international lighting designers, Marty Langthorne and Nao Nagai. Taking place in Toynbee Studios' fully-rigged theatre, the Lab will offer a broad overview of the principals of light and the interplay of shadow, direction and colour. Explorations will focus on how to use light to create images and affects in performance-making, how to create a design with minimal resources, and technical know-how.

This Lab is open to anyone interested in discovering the possibilities of light and its ability to convey emotion, create atmosphere and define space. 16 places are available on a first come, first served basis. No prior lighting experience is necessary in order to take part.
