Artsadmin Jerwood Commissions

2013

Alongside Artsadmin’s artist bursary scheme and with generous support from the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, the Artsadmin Jerwood Commission supports the creation of two new works by artists who have previously received bursaries from Artsadmin.

We are delighted to announce the two artists selected to create Artsadmin Jerwood Commissions in 2013; David Blandy and Serena Korda. The artists were selected by Artsadmin from the last two rounds of Artsadmin’s bursary scheme (2007 and 2005).

David Blandy will create Biter, a new video performance work. A hip-hop fan since the early 90’s, David’s commission will examine how much hip-hop has entered the artists unconscious mind by making an inventory of every rap lyric that he can remember. Biter will ask questions about identity – how much of the artist’s self is hip-hop? What percentage of his thoughts are not legally his? David will undergo hypnosis and catalogue the collated lyrics. The finished work will include film of the process and a rap video.

Serena Korda will use the commission to realise a work to form part of Aping the Beast, a solo exhibition at Camden Arts Centre, London and Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool. Aping the Beast uses animal symbolism and folklore to explore our fear of the unknown and how we have evolved to confront these fears through imitation, spectacle, ritual and humour. Aping the Beast will comprise a 15ft monster and a series of smaller monster costumes inspired by archetypal B-movie creatures. The ‘beasts’ will feature in performances throughout the exhibitions, animated by participants, both within and outside the two galleries.

Both David and Serena received bursaries from Artsadmin in 2005. The next round of our bursary scheme will be launched in October 2012.
