One To One

Rosemary Lee

© Pau Ros
1999 – 2022

Initially a research & development project initiated by Rosemary Lee in collaboration with five artists from different disciplines. Rosemary invited Graeme Miller, Sue MacLennan, Gary Carter, Simon Whitehead, and Mary Niblett, all artists with whom she has worked with in the past, in a variety of ways, to join the project.

“All the pieces in retrospect were autobiographical in some way and all exploited and challenged different elements of my performance vocabulary. Language Lesson explored the roots of language, landscape and expression, Time Lapses combined voice and movement to express past present and future, both involved complex improvisation tasks. Tidal Secretary, site specific for the Court Room in Toynbee Studios, explored the themes of the sea and living on the edge of land and sea through characterisation and Shingle Street, shot on the East Anglian coast, reveals a woman drawn from sea to land and compelled to bury herself much like the intent journey of the sea turtle to the sand once a year at full moon.”

“Everything Rosemary Lee does is intriguing”

The resulting solos were: Language Lesson by Graeme Miller at Union Chapel, Tidal Secretary by Gary Carter at Toynbee Studios, Time Lapses by Sue MacLennan and Boundaries by Mary Niblett at Jacksons Lane.

Language Lesson and Time Lapses were revived in One to One x2 for Spring Loaded at The Place Theatre, London in 1999 and other venues nationally.

As part of the research time she also asked her 7 year old son Isaac Lee – Kronick to create Kangerkey Dances for her, at Jacksons Lane.

Simon Whitehead created a short film, Shingle Street, shown at Cardigan Art Centre in 2008 as part of a retrospective of his work.
