MIDDLESEA

2008

Zineb Sedira's major new film installation, MiddleSea, has been produced by Artsadmin and opens at the Wapping Project in September. MiddleSea, shown on a vast central screen in the main gallery and accompanied by a series of photographs, charts a journey by boat, an archetypal, timeless passage between two places.

Mesmerised, we enter a space in between, transfixed by the patterns of the waves, the never-ending plumes of spray, the immense horizon. One lone passenger stares out to sea, watching, waiting. We are drawn into the narrative. Time passes, memory and imagination mix.

Accompanied by an audio soundscape from Mikhail Karikis that combines location sound with composed sound, MiddleSea evokes a journey taken by generations.

MiddleSea is a sequel to Saphir, the video installation exhibited at the Photographers’ Gallery in 2006, and continues to explore themes of place, transition and mobility whilst developing a poetic and cinematic narration.
