Emma Smith has a site-specific social practice that utilizes performance, encounters, occurrences and live events to explore human engagement with place, looking in particular at the impact and resonance of historical events and usage of sites on contemporary behavior.
Smith works through a process of establishing collaborative and inter-disciplinary teams and is interested in the reversal of roles: artist-audience, author-contributor, guest and host.
Since graduating from Goldsmiths in 2003, Smith has exhibited at Camden Arts Centre (2005 - 2006), Whitechapel Gallery (2007 & 2008), Wysing Arts Centre (2010, 2011 & 2012), Grizedale (2011), The Showroom (2011) and Tate Modern (2011 & 2012), among others.International residencies include Gasworks Triangle Trust Fellowship to Mauritius (2009), research trips with the British Council to China and India (2009 & 2010), Kuona Trust Residency in Kenya (2011) and a Common Wealth Foundation Residency in the Canadian Arctic (2012). Smith is co-founder and co-director of art collaboration Delta Arts.
Smith was Artist Fellow of The Showroom 2010-2011, an Artsadmin Bursary recipient 2011-2012 and is a resident of the ACME Fire Station scheme 2010- 2015.
