Lighthouse in the Sea of Time

Zineb Sedira

Commissioned by Folkestone Triennial, Lighthouse in the Sea of Time is a multi-screen film/sound installation that explores two historic lighthouses in Algeria, built during French rule in the late 19th-early 20th century. The shots capture these imposing and exquisitely historic, architectural and political landmarks, and include interviews with the lighthouse keepers, who reminisce about life inside these isolated towers. For Sedira, this work is also a reflection on her relationship to Algiers.

“The work is shot, with great lyricism…and augmented by an evocative soundtrack, which includes the singing of birds, the crashing of waves, and the plaintive suggestions of a distant foghorn…the lighthouses, built during the French occupation, speak to Sedira as ‘guardians of Algerian history’….Sedira honours both the structures and the people who make them work.”
