Ant Hampton: CRAZY BUT TRUE
2-5pm. Free (durational, come and go as you please). This event is part of 2 Degrees Festival's day-long Tomorrow Now programme on Saturday 10 June.
Witness a panel of children relay extraordinary facts – some shocking, some just plain funny.
“The number of wild animals on Earth has halved in the past 40 years.”
“You can't kill yourself by holding your breath.”
“Butterflies taste with their feet.”
CRAZY BUT TRUE is an interactive installation performed by children aged 8-12, who, cast as 'experts', are given their lines via headphones, repeating what they hear, without rehearsal. What results is a rolling list of extraordinary facts – some serious, others very funny. Despite the fun, one thing becomes clear for the adults watching: bringing a child into the world is the easy part. More difficult is how to bring the world into a child.
As the facts switch and roll, we feel the fearlessness of the children's wonder and their willingness to absorb what the world has to offer, no matter how crazy it seems. For adults watching, we feel at once ’outside' this game and also deeply involved in or responsible for the world it describes.
Children attending with adults are able to participate on the day. There is no rehearsal but we do suggest that they watch others before giving it a go. The performance time for each child is 12 minutes.
CRAZY BUT TRUE is by Ant Hampton.
