Join Anna-Maria Nabirye and Annie Saunders on Artsadmin’s Instagram to go live on 1 July and 15 July at 10pm to talk about the process of their project Up in Arms.

The theme of their Instagram Live chat is: What is a conversation, actually?

There’s so much talk of “having the hard conversation,” “staying in the conversation,” “being part of the conversation,” and so on. Do we mean talking and listening to each other, sharing space, physically or digitally (and is that possible?) The meaning of the word “conversation” derives from “to turn or bend together.” In this session we’ll look deeper at what “conversation” means to us, what it can do, what it can’t, and what its meaning might offer for a wider context.

Definition:
conversation, n.
mid-14c., “place where one lives or dwells,” also “general course of actions or habits, manner of conducting oneself in the world,” (obsolete); from Old French conversacion “behavior, life, way of life, monastic life,” and directly from Latin “frequent use, frequent abode in a place, intercourse, conversation,” stem conversari “to live, dwell, live with, keep company with,” from conversare “to turn about, turn about with,” from “with, together” (see con-) + versare, vertere “to turn, bend”

About Up in Arms

Up In Arms uses ritual, photography and immersive theatre practice to create intimate conversation and radical social change.

Anna-Maria and Annie invite two participants – a black woman and a friend of her choice – to re-embody and re-create Dan Wynn’s iconic a portrait of Dorothy Pitman-Hughes and Gloria Steinem. The re-creation of this image acts as a ritual to open space for uncomfortable, challenging, transformative conversation, led by the artists.

The resulting audio and video recordings and portraits from the live event will form an interactive visual exhibition, a live documentary presentation, a performance lecture and a handbook on collaboration and intersectionality.

Up In Arms has been developed in the home countries of the two artists, the UK and USA with residencies, performances and live events taking place at No.w.here & The Showroom Gallery, London, UK; MANA Contemporary, Jersey City, USA; The International Female Film Festival, Dortmund, Germany.
