In Country Dance, lightning striked the boneyard of English tradition and a skelly-dance was called up in the din and drizzle of the city spaces.
The shapes and patterns of a lost vernacular enthral a company of individuals to invent a social dance from available fragments. Yelled and stuttered, faltering and colliding, the steps and music drum out the poisons and evoke the beasts and angels of Shopping City, revealing moments of beauty and abandon. In the transformed Place Theatre, Country Dance was an enactment in dance, music and the verbal arts – an urban, pagan, social event.
