Portrait of Ernesta

Ackroyd & Harvey

Portrait of Ernesta, Ackroyd & Harvey
1995 – 2020

Presented by Artigianato Vivo in Chiesa San Vito, Cison di Valmarino, Italy

“Portrait of Ernesta, a framed portrait of an elderly Italian woman, achieved an unusual level of autonomy. The free-standing portrait, printed on grass, attached to a roughly constructed chestnut easel was placed inside a tiny deserted North Italian church near where she lived. Her face was clearly recognisable from the entrance, but her features became unclear, even lost when viewed from close up. The dried grass presented a brittle transient quality, a broken surface adding up to a powerful whole, an especially poignant image in a predominantly agricultural area.”
