Two Degrees: Potion

11am & 2pm. Free. Start at Toynbee Studios

Join Rebecca and Pete Harrison on a contemplative journey through the back streets and secret gardens of East London to explore herbal folklore and hidden histories. Gathering plants along the way, you will be guided towards a performance in the heart of the city to extract a potent potion.

Investigating plants that occupy the edge between 'medicine' and 'poison', Rebecca Beinart’s commission for Two Degrees, Potion, explores the delicate balance between a substance that can support health and life, or cause illness and death if too high dosages are used. Rebecca will be harvesting and processing powerful plants from public sites around London, and collecting stories of the medicinal and magical properties of these plants. Throughout the festival a mobile apothecary will be installed at Toynbee Studios. Potion invites you to consider questions of potency, knowledge, power and healing; and the notion of a tipping point which depends fundamentally on a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Rebecca Beinart is an artist based in Nottingham. Through adaptable objects and live events, she makes interventions in public space, seeking to interrupt assumptions about a place and its inhabitants, and understand perspectives that she could not see alone. Her practice explores ideas around ecology, place-making and the permeable boundaries between art, science and activism. In 2008 she completed the MA in Arts and Ecology at Dartington School of Art.

We will be going ahead with Potion even if the weather is bad so wrap up warm and bring your umbrella!
