A striking exhibition at the newly reopened Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology runs from 23 June – 18 August. This features a body of paintings, drawings and sketchbooks by Rachel Gadsden and the Bambanani Group artists, created through the Unlimited Global Alchemy residencies.
The exhibition also features seven short films, featuring Gadsden and the Bambanani Group – Nondumiso Hlwele, Noloyiso Balintulo, Bongiwe Mba, Thozama Ndevu, Thobani Ncapai and Zodwa Somlayi – which were shot on location in Khayelitsha Township and at SOBEIT Studios, Cape Town, in October 2011.
Made by Gadsden with filmmakers Cliff Bestall and Deborah May, each portrait offers a glimpse of the world as seen through its subject’s eyes; at turns joyful, resolute, defiant, heartfelt and poetic. Viewed together, the series presents multiple reflections on the political and personal currents explored throughout Unlimited Global Alchemy. All films are fully subtitled in English.
