New Empowering School

The New Empowering School is a place for a community of movers and shakers conceived by Project O.

Based at Toynbee Studios for ten weeks this spring, Project O will be working with a group of participants with a focus on engaging with the body as an agent of movement, politics, desire, self and dance. A space of permission, discussion, transformation and revelation through languages of the body-mind.

The School is for both trained and non-trained movers and celebrates moving for the pure shameless mad joy of it, for the reveal of it and for the labour of it.

Project O is a collaboration between Alexandrina Hemsley and Jamila Johnson-Small.

The New Empowering School is part of Project O’s creative process for their current work SWAGGA with Charlotte Cooper and Kay Hyatt and has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and an Artsadmin Artist’s Bursary.

Project O (Alex Hemsley and Jamila Johnson-Small) are starting a free course at Toynbee Studios, open to people with an interest in moving and getting to know their bodies better. The school is open to dancers as well as those who are not trained dancers.

Focusing on engaging participants with their bodies as agents of movement, politics, desire, self and dance, the New Empowering School aims to develop a new community of movers.

There will be ten weekly sessions on Wednesdays between 29 April-8 July, 7pm – 9pm, led by different artists invited by Project O.

To express your interest send a statement (text/audio/video – no CVs) about why you would like to be part of The New Empowering School and any questions to acontemporarystruggle@gmail.com by Sunday 29 March. You should be able to commit to attending all sessions.

All sessions are FREE and will be at Toynbee Studios, 28 Commercial Street, London, E1 6AB. Toynbee Studios is an accessible venue.
