For The Best

For The Best

For The Best is an imaginative and creative exploration of a family’s experience of living with renal disease inspired by and created with the children in the Dialysis Unit at Evelina Hospital School (Southwark). It is the third in a series of work by artist Mark Storor and producer Anna Ledgard supported by the Wellcome Trust, following on from Boychild at Southwell Park, Portland and Visiting Time at Dorset County Hospital. In a performance that works through metaphor and allusion as well as narrative, the events, thoughts, feelings and responses of the ‘Haemo Family’ are expressed through enactment, visual image, movement, music, sound and setting by both professional performers and children from Worple and Charles Dickens primary schools. It is will also include work from the children on the Dialysis Unit at Evelina Hospital from whose testimonies and experience For the Best has emerged.
Developed over nine months with young people, teachers, parents, primary school children, artists and performers, For The Best explores how individual testimony can be the starting point for making theatre which articulates and captures the essence of children’s experiences. The aesthetic, rhythm and sound of the work is inspired by and infused with the voices of the children in the hospital school. The unfaltering honesty of the children’s material means that, even though we as makers seem to add layers of our own experience, and these layers deepen as the audience brings its own experience and stories, the very core of it remains theirs.
