To Part And Return – Artist’s Talk

Lucia King

Artists’ Talk followed by Video Screening ‘To Part and Return’ (3-4pm)

Lucia King’s film work explores the sensual, physical and transitional states of being a performer; the shift of reality taking place between the role and the real. Part of a series of screen-based artworks that unpack the many dimensions of what it means to perform, her new video installation, ‘To Part and Return’ continues in this trajectory with the dancer and stage director, Vinay Kumar from South India.
The piece shows Kumar in close relationship with the subtropical landscape where Adishakti is based (the company that he directs). The preparatory tasks in the day-to-day and the intensity of performing flow seamlessly into one another. A parallel story subtly unfolds within the film’s visual narrative; an allegory of separation and return to an object of devotion. This devotion becomes both Kumar’s connection with his practice, and to an absent partner who appears fleetingly amidst his action.
A consummate performer, Kumar’s practice combines South Indian martial arts training with epic dance-theatre and percussion, creating a contemporary and hybrid performance language of its own.
