Dominoes – The Film
Station House Opera
A Create/Bank of America Merill Lynch commission involving 500 volunteers, Dominoes was one of the highlights of summer 09 using over 10,000 concrete blocks to create an extraordinary moving sculpture along a 11-kilometre route, unfolding across East and South East London over the course of the day.
The film combines the footage of the live event on Sunday 26th July 2009 together with new footage of the blocks wending their way through West Ham cemetery, a house, a Victorian sewer, and a primary school in Hackney, “joining” the crowd in Mile End, through Matt’s Gallery, on the canal and Thames, creating games in Island Gardens, going down the stairs of the foot tunnel, reaching the Royal Naval College and leading to the performance.
Standing in the foot tunnel waiting for the dominoes to come and hearing the gentle plock plock sound of them coming down the tunnel accompanied by wolf whistles and cheering will stay with me for ever as one of those truly magic London things I’ve done. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Dominoes Volunteer
