Town Hall Artwork Tours
5 & 7pm. Free
Town Hall Hotel Apartments is a triumphant marriage of the best of old and new. To celebrate Bethnal Green’s role as the heart of London’s artistic community, Artsadmin was approached in 2010 by hotel owner and entrepreneur Peng Loh to run an open commission scheme to challenge up and coming artists to create works for the new hotel. Over 175 artists who live and work in the boroughs of Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham applied; the judging panel chose five winning artists. For one day the public is invited to view the permanent artworks by Bálint Bolygó, Debbie Lawson, Peter Liversidge, Claire Morgan, Zoë Mendelson and walkwalkwalk.
The artists were given freedom to work across a range of media and respond to the architectural and historical features, as well as the social context of the town hall. What has been created by the artists is an eclectic mix of the sublime, the beautiful, the secretive, poetic and fantastical in an elegant building combining Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary splendour.
Tours will be run by Artsadmin curators Manick Govinda and Cat Harrison.
