On Air is a broadcast work staged in Bilbao between an aerial vantage point and an underground auditorium. For a single hour at sunset the landscape is translated into words by a duo of commentators and relayed to a remote audience in the subterranean gallery space, turning it into a kind of sonic camera obscura where an act of faith between the listeners and speakers ensues.
Graeme Miller’s team of audio describers unlock the space of the city from its centre out to the surrounding hills. A score of shifting grammatical tools reveal juxtaposition, synchronicity, action, space, the common and the unique. On Air will take place three times, each broadcast being a unique composed response to the city.
The work takes place within Prototipoak, a curated exposition of performances that uses the volume of the Azkuna Zentroa gallery to refract the surrounding city.
