In 2024, James Gallego Olivo was selected to take part in Lab X, a pilot artistic residency and cultural exchange between Thailand and the UK, supported by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture programme. The programme was co-designed by Artsadmin and Creative Migration to support artists navigating the complexities of international collaboration. As part of the residency, James spent two weeks at Creative Migration’s Bangkok 1899 in August 2024. During this time, he engaged with local communities, explored new creative processes, and developed interdisciplinary work in response to the cultural and social context of Bangkok. Lab X offered James dedicated mentorship, a materials budget, and the support of a UK-based producer, fostering a space for experimentation and cross-cultural dialogue. His participation in the programme deepened his international practice and strengthened artistic connections between Southeast Asia and the UK.
