Jonathon Allen

Jonathan Allen’s work currently occupies a space somewhere between the art gallery and magic show stage.

Often exploring magic’s role as a ‘cultural agent’, his work highlights the ambivalent power of illusion and its role in assembling our sense of the real.

His performance alter-ego Tommy Angel, an unredeemed and unredeeming ‘gospel magician’, has been scandalizing pulpits and evangelizing cabaret audiences since 2001. Jonathan is presently exploring the use of prerecorded and interactive sound within the context of magic performance as live art practice.
