Naresh Kaushal is a multidisciplinary artist who combines socially engaged practice, abstraction and experimental storytelling to explore the lived experience of power in society. Focusing particularly on underrepresented voices, he mixes visual and participatory arts to create spaces for agency, ownership, critique and empowerment amongst participants and audiences. A filmmaker who developed a participatory practice, he is drawn to interdisciplinary ways of working, with the different strands of his approach coming together in the form of playable installations. Place and the exploration of different modalities of audience are recurring themes in his work.
“In Lab 26 I want to develop my ongoing body of work Dreams of a person from playable gallery installation to site specific participatory experience. I want to explore how LARP and Theatre of The Oppressed can transform the piece into a collective reimagining of place and memory foregrounding inclusion and intersectionality. The work understands archive as collective memory (not historical object) and place as physical space performed. I will investigate how embodiment can harness these ideas to create space for resonance over time and space. Unpicking narratives of power and creating conditions for critique, solidarity and resistance.” – Naresh
