Philip Ewe’s practice encompasses live performances, interventions, photography, film and installation. He crafts work often in public (and not-so-public) spaces, channeling the rapidly redeveloping city and its attendant mental states to explore the psychological space between the city and the individual as sites of Capital and speculation. Laced with jeopardy, the scenarios and characters that drive the work emerge from psychotherapy, mass media, surveillance, sex, the scrolling digital world of ‘content’, and slapstick.
“During this residency Philip will develop a new solo performance using lighting fittings from his father’s London business in the 1980s and 90s. The project entwines lighting, movement, voice, music and audience to explore inheritance, family, mortality and the archetypal figure of the Father. Working with a choreographer/dance teacher, Philip will experiment with the irony of using performance, humour and artifice to approach emotions. The period of experimentation will ask how audience congregation around singular figures (himself) makes for shared (at times, unstable) space for uncertainty, connection and congregation with an audience.” – Philip
