Ray Young

Profile

Ray is an award-winning transdisciplinary performance artist, writer, educator and coach. Creating unique, genre defying work through collaboration and residence to traditional form, Ray’s practice exists at boundaries of live art, activism and immersive experience. Examining race, queerness, climate justice and neurodiversity, Ray’s work holds space for those who face intersecting systemic barriers, celebrating and championing these identities.Ray’s writing work includes commissions for The Royal Court, Music Theatre Wales, Brighton Festival, and they were selected as members of the Royal Court Writer’s Group and the BBC Writer’s Room. Their work has also been published in collections such as Writing Queer Performance by Finnian Tweed and Women in Performance by Sarah Gorman.

Committed to sharing their knowledge and experience to empower others, Ray also maintains an ongoing practice in mentoring, coaching and teaching including at institutions such as Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Goldsmiths University, London Contemporary Dance School, University of Warwick and University of Roehampton. They have also spoken at events and panels around the UK sharing their expertise on topics such as anti-racism, accessibility and sustainability in the arts.

he remount of Ray’s critically acclaimed and award-winning piece OUT, a defiant challenge to homophobia and transphobia in the Caribbean community, recently returned from international presentations in Vancouver, Toronto and Belgium, following a UK tour culminating at Sadlers Wells.

Another recent work, their swimming pool-set immersive experience, BODIES, exploring the correlation between climate and social justice, toured the UK and visited the USA, having been selected for the Horizon showcase at Edinburgh Festival. Other work has been presented widely in the UK and internationally including London, Cambridge, Brighton, Leeds, Mexico City, Dublin, Geneva, Skopje and Vienna.
