Tomato Lichy

Profile

Born deaf, I started off as a performance artist and street activist, but was always handicapped by not knowing sign language. I’d been brought up to reject signing as surrender to disability, but that upbringing and attitude itself disabled me.

Finally accepting myself and learning sign language, I was astounded at what a beautiful language it was, and how many doors it opened to me. Today I’m devoted to exploring the possibilities of BSL (British Sign Language) in the creative arts, and am currently researching and learning how deaf people themselves identify and construct their aesthetic appreciations of sign languages.
