Mark Storor: The Barometer of My Heart

A shy young man, a natural goalkeeper, throws himself into the air.
A man, a dad of middle age, dances a marathon.
Two soldiers attempt to make sense. Faded Glory lies inert.
Unheard in the dark another man harms himself.
“Okey cokey, you can get dressed now.”

Through creative workshops with men in religious, military, sports and corporate settings, and research with men attending erectile dysfunction clinics*, Mark Storor has carved out a distinctive space for men to talk freely.

Inspired by real conversations with these men, public performances will bring experiences previously kept in the shadows into the light.

“A disturbing and raw exploration of masculinity, potency and its constant companion, impotency”

Review by Louisa Dunnigan, Erotic Review (warning: spoilers)

“Storor is a genius at excavating lived experience and showing it as staged metaphor”

Feature by Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

“I have never seen anything like this, and probably won’t ever do again”

Review by Steph Watkins, A Younger Theatre (warning: spoliers)

Made in collaboration with an international company of artists and participants, The Barometer of My Heart explores the rich diversity of male experience. Carnivalesque, primitive and tender: still and moving image, music and animation, live performance, science and sound combine to create an intimate reimagining of masculinity today.

Produced by Anna Ledgard in association with Artsadmin. Made in collaboration with Everton FC Community Foundation, FACT Veterans in Practice Group, Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health and Wellbeing Centre and St. George’s Hospital, Tooting. Funded by Wellcome Trust and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

*40% of men over 40 will experience erectile dysfunction during their lives. Erectile dysfunction is an indicator of cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease and stroke. It is also the unspoken root of anxiety, stress and depression.
