What are the problems, or the licence acquired, in performing without ‘official’ backing? And how do outsiders fare at the hands of performance historians, archivists and critics? Do they desire, or deserve, to be recognized and lauded by such formal authorities, or is there value in remaining outside? With Platform and Liberate Tate, Oreet Ashery, Bavand Behpoor, Bettina Knaup, Rocio Boliver (La Congelada de Uva), and Joe E. Jeffreys.
Trashing Performance explores the power of creative expressions that wilfully debunk or ignore cultural ideals and hierarchies of critical value. This programme of events provide a space to think again about the value of irreverent and sometimes overlooked performance practices in public exchanges between different performance audiences and artists, academics, activists, and curators.
Trashing Performance is second themed year of Performance Matters, a collaboration between the Live Art Development Agency, Goldsmiths, University of London, and the University of Roehampton. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
