Walking:Holding
Rosana Cade
Rosana Cade, in association with Théâtre Prospero, brings Walking:Holding to Canada from 31 August to 11 September 2022.
What does your town look like from someone else’s perspective? How intimate can you be with someone you’ve just met?
Walking:Holding invites you to walk hand in hand with a series of very different local strangers around nearby streets, parks and alleyways. It is a participatory performance for one audience member at a time, offering a gentle meditation on identity, touch and intimacy in urban public space.
During a 40-minute stroll through the city, each spectator holds hands with six Montreal participants of different ages, genders, social backgrounds, cultural and sexual identities. The duos follow a meticulously thought-out and previously established route. No interaction is scripted, leaving the space open to instinctive and organic connection.
This performance, created by Rosana Cade in Glasgow in 2011, has since toured extensively to over 35 locations, working with local participants as performers in each location. It comes to life for the first time in Montreal, after two years of the pandemic has undermined the most innocuous human contacts. The performance will then be presented by Le Périscope in Quebec City and Le Trillium in Ottawa.
