A new festival of live and visual art by the sea

PILOT was a free mini festival of newly commissioned installations and performances that took place in various locations around the seaside town of Brightlingsea, Essex. The festival was created and curated by Caroline Wright and featured work by Amy Sharrocks, Richard DeDomenici, Briony Clarke, Jackie Chettur and Wayne Burrows.

At the inaugural festival on 7 & 8 September 2013 crowds gathered to hear Caroline Wright and a cast of singers perform a new musical work from a Brightlingsea beach hut; view strange, enchanting seascapes off of Bateman’s Tower prom and watch Wayne Burrow’s film whilst surrounded by reminders of Brightlingsea’s unique history. Meanwhile, seventeen local shops, café’s and pubs accepted 68 of Richard DeDomenici’s Knitcoins; 20 people donated their water to Amy Sharrock’s Museum of Water; dozens of children and adult’s alike sampled Briony Clarke’s candy floss clouds and over 40 people braced the cold to join us in Sidelong’s mass public swim in the lido.

“Great festival! Some really lovely moments of art, friendship and community.

Pasco Kevlin, Norwich Arts Centre

“Thank you for a great experience. We made it to all the artists at some point and enjoyed the diversity of everyone… a fantastic weekend.”

Jon & Jack, local residents
