Monuments of Tower Hamlets

Tim Spooner

Exhibition by Tim Spooner and Year 2 students from Canon Barnett Primary School

Using forgotten materials such as fluff, discarded scraps of wood and pieces of broken toys, artist Tim Spooner and Year 2 students from Canon Barnett Primary School in Aldgate East have created an exhibition of miniature sculptures that present an alternative view of Tower Hamlets.

They embarked on six visits to local places of interest, including Whitechapel Gallery, Brady Arts Centre and Gardners (Spitalfields’ oldest family business), collecting otherwise overlooked materials to create the Monuments of Tower Hamlets sculptures. The children transformed these recycled materials into a series of tiny, delicate sculptures that are made from and respond to their local environment.

Explore this abstract model village of Monuments of Tower Hamlets and interpret them as buildings, natural forms or inhabitants. The exhibition evokes Tim’s fascination with the totemic power of objects and a sense of the specific and the local that they carry despite their mysterious nature.

Opening as part of Aldgate in Winter on 6 December 2019, 4-8pm. The exhibition will then be open Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm.
