These hands-on planting and growing sessions will be an opportunity to participate in the cultivation and transformation of the garden beds outside Toynbee Studios.

Join artist, writer and human ecologist Zoë Laureen Palmer, and community grower, organiser and educator, Ali Yellop for some gentle planting. This will involve working with a range of grasses, shrubs, wildflowers, ferns and bulbs, as well as herbs that support psycho-emotional wellbeing. The sessions will be held entirely outside and in the event of severe weather conditions the dates will be changed and attendees will be notified via email. There’s no need to bring equipment, and light drinks and snacks will be provided. Older children and young people are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

These workshops are for residents of Aldgate, Whitechapel and Spitalfields. We encourage you to join for as many dates as you can!

biome: planting and growing workshops is part of biome: experiments in radical kinship, a year-long residency programme in the Artsadmin Canteen from Zoë Laureen Palmer. This residency, which began in June 2023 and continues into July 2024, explores how we can feel our way into meaningful relationships with the natural world, within the communities local to Toynbee Studios.

  • One of the planting areas – the lowered stepped beds in Mallon Gardens – is not accessible via wheelchair. At every workshop, there will be wheelchair accessible planting options as an alternative
  • There are wheelchair accessible toilets at Toynbee Studios. Read more about Accessibility at Toynbee Studios
  • All toilets at Toynbee Studios are gender neutral
