We invite Black and brown womxn of all ages based in Tower Hamlets to offer a recording of you breathing, talking about your relationship to your breathing in these times, singing or humming. The recording will take just 15 minutes and we are offering £30 per person and to cover your travel costs.

On Tuesday 13 July 2021 from 12.30pm – 3.30pm, come and meet us in the Southern Grove in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.

On Wednesday 14 July from 12.30pm – 3.30pm, we will be at Artsadmin’s Toynbee Studios (E1 6AB) in Studio 3. Please come to the reception at Toynbee Studios. The recording takes place indoors but we have Covid safety measures in place.

These recordings will be edited together to form an audio piece by artist Selina Thompson that will be shared across Tower Hamlets in September.

About the project

Immersion is a collaboration between Selina Thompson, the People of Tower Hamlets and the Air they Breathe.

Built from a chorus of breath collected in parks across the borough, the sound is a moment of cleansing and defiance, taking a sound we are surrounded by and tuning into its beauty at a time when breathing has never felt so loaded.

Immersion culminates in a choral performance at Artsadmin’s Toynbee Studios, amplifying and strengthening the sound, and tuning in to the defiance of borough’s history. For one evening, four groups of self-appointed Custodians of Air will stand facing the North, South, East and West of Tower Hamlets, playing the sounds of breathing out into the night.

“Breath is not invisible to those for whom breathing is difficult”

Immersion is one of the commissions for Season for Change, a UK-wide cultural programme inspiring urgent and inclusive action on climate change, delivered in partnership by Artsadmin and Julie’s Bicycle. This project is supported by ACT (Art, Climate, Transition) through the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, the Foundation for FutureLondon and City of London, and Arts Council England through Season for Change.
