Cai Yuan and JJ Xi ( Mad For Real ) are renowned for their controversial action Two Artists Jump on Tracey’s bed (1999) at Tate Britain’s Turner Prize.
Drawing on seemingly banal subject matter such as soya sauce and the Monkey King, Mad for Real make witty and absurd commentaries through ironic action and posturing. Their latest work The Monkey, is an allegorical rendition of the journey of the monk Xuan Zang who travelled on foot to India to seek the Sutra, the Buddhist holy book. The story is mingled with Chinese fables, fairy tales, legends, superstitions, popular beliefs, monster stories as well as the Daoist and Buddhist religions.
