Following the opening of their latest production, The Resurfacing Problem, at the Pompidou Centre in Paris in June 2009, Artsadmin invited Grand Magasin to spend four weeks at Toynbee Studios developing and adapting the piece for a UK audience, culminating in two performances as part of the UK French Embassy’s Paris Calling season.
Founded in 1992, Grand Magasin, made up of artists Pascale Murtin and François Hiffler and more recently Bettina Atala, have created a huge range of performances which have been presented in theatre, gallery and festival contexts. The Resurfacing Problem focussed on three demonstrators whose performance is constantly interrupted by the acoustic effects generated by a series of devices.
The Resurfacing Problem was presented by Artsadmin as part of Paris Calling. Co-produced by Grand Magasin, IRCAM/Les Spectacles vivants-Centre Pompidou. Supported by Centre Culturel André Malraux, Scène Nationale de Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, Artsadmin through the French Embassy in UK’s Paris Calling season and CulturesFrance. Grand Magasin is subsidised by the Ministry of Culture (D.R.A.C. Ile de France) and by the Conseil Général du Val-de-Marne.
