Weekender with Gob Squad
10.30am-5.30pm.
This two day workshop offers an insight into the strategies and methodologies that Gob Squad use when creating new work. The workshop will touch on the company's approach to using text, video and sites to create touching, humorous and confessional performance work which mixes reality with fiction. The workshop will look at the the methods and processes from two recent Gob Squad shows, Are You With Us and Dancing About. A video camera and a therapists chair provide the frame through which to scrutinise and interrogate each other using improvisation structures as a performance tool and as a way of developing text for performance. Physically, no dance training is required as we make statements that are true for us. We will dance if we agree (freestyle) and if we do not agree, we will not dance. Again, using these game structures we practice performing ourselves in a real time situation, and use these games as a means to develop writing.
Gob Squad is a collective that has been working together for almost 20 years. Characterised by a desire to place the beautiful in the mundane, their performances often site home made magic and spectacle next to the banality of everyday life. They make both site-specific and theatre-based work, often using video to capture intimate and improvised encounters between performers and audience members or passers-by.
